Habit Forming Exercise Tips

My best advice for surviving bathing suit season is to exercise.  If you have trouble exercising, try the following tips as part of your everyday lifestyle. Find something you like and you're more likely to do it regularly.  For instance, you may like softball, volleyball, dancing, or running, join a club or find a class. Change your routine - switching things up keeps it interesting.  Many get bored doing the same thing over and over again. Try something new.  By participating in something new or interesting, you're keeping things fresh. Schedule time with yourself.  It is important to have some alone time.  Find time in the morning, at lunch or in the evening for some downtime.  One of my favorite alone things to do is to find a shady area outdoors and read a book.  See my Summer reading post. Find someone to join you on an activity or class.  When you have someone joining you, it is easier to stick to a routine. Set goals.  Set a plan in motion.   If you're looking to lose weight, start a diet.  Reward yourself when you have reached your goal.  Some non-food rewards to consider are shopping for something new, treat yourself to a spa treatment or take a mini-vacation. Have reasonable goals.  Don't set yourself up to fail.  Find something you like to do.  When you enjoy something, it is easier to continue participating. Habit Forming Exercise Challenge yourself by participating in something you enjoy.  Some habit forming exercise to consider are: Walking - Take a long walk on the beach, a park, or neighborhood. Bicycling - Cycling gives you good cardiovascular exercise.  You can bicycle either by yourself or with someone. Tennis - Even if you're not a serious tennis player, you can enjoy volleying the ball back and forth.  This is a fun activity to do in the morning or evening. Volleyball - It is fun to play on the beach or with a group of people. Softball - There are many softball leagues in towns and cities everywhere. In any event, habit forming exercise tips can [...]

Summer Health

Warm weather is upon us and time to focus on our Summer health.  Summer months can be tricky for diets.  Many of us have graduation parties, weddings, cookouts, beach parties, vacations and other festivities to attend June, July and August.  With so many parties to attend, let's focus on drinking more water, eating more fruit and vegetables at these events. Improve Summer Health As summer is underway, let's focus on putting our best foot forward by eating healthier and finding the time to exercise.  Make a fruit smoothie by using blueberries, blackberries, bananas, raspberries or strawberries every day.  By loading up on antioxidants, you can help prevent some cancers, and keep your cholesterol lower. Move around outdoors.  Participate in a physical activity such as volleyball, tennis, paddleball, bicycling, or golf.  If you're not a sports fan, take long walks on the beach or by a lake.  Take up gardening - you will be getting physical exercise while planting healthy vegetables or beautiful flowers. When going out to dinner or if you have an upcoming Summer vacation planned, try to eat smaller portions of your entrée or see if someone would like to split something with you.  On vacation, plan some downtime to relax, read a book (see my summer reading post), or sightsee.  Use your vacation time to unwind and recharge your batteries. Conclusion Wear sunglasses outdoors.  It is important to protect your eyes from ultraviolet rays.  There are many fashionable sunglasses to wear outside (see my healthy vision post). Go lighter on alcohol.  One of my favorite drinks is a white or red wine Sangria.  It is a lighter wine usually made with fresh fruits and juice.  A wine spritzer or light beer is another alcohol recommendation.  Keep your alcohol intake at a low level during the summer months. Eat more vegetables (see my zucchini spiral post for recipe recommendations).  One of my favorite things to do in the summertime is to shop at the various Farmers Market.  There is always an abundance of fresh vegetables, fruits and fish available. Also with long days of sunlight, we tend to go to bed later [...]
